Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Pharmacology and Medicines Optimisation

This is an exciting opportunity for an exceptional and experienced expert in Pharmacology/Medicines Optimisation to lead the academic and professional overview of education and practice across a range of professionally based programs

The successful candidate will support the highly successful non-medical prescribing programs for Nurses, Pharmacists’ and Allied Health Professionals, alongside the Pharmacology curriculum requirements in the MSc Physician Associate and MSc Advancing Clinical Practice Programmes.

 The candidate will be required to develop and contribute to transformational health and social care agenda’s that support new models of healthcare delivery through new ways of working. The post holder will be committed to promoting academic enquiry that develops critical thinking in students at all levels and which supports safe, effective, evidenced based decision making for medicine administration and prescribing practice.

 The post holder will also be responsible for supporting an inter-professional approach to medicines optimisation to ensure students and graduating staff in the workforce are able to support this key health agenda. This multi-professional approach will develop expertise in medicines optimisation across teams of staff from foundation degree programmes through to post graduate programmes.

By providing expert knowledge, the post holder will teach and lead agreed modules, assess students, supervise undergraduate and post graduate research and engage in curriculum development.

 Selection process:

Shortlisted candidates invited to interview will be asked to deliver a 20 minute teaching session (followed by 5 minutes of questions) aimed at Masters level students on a Non- Medical Prescribing program ‘An introduction to effective medicines optimization across health and social care.’
The Chair of this panel will feed back to the main interview panel.

The post sits within the Department of Allied Health and Social Science, which is one of three departments within the Institute of Health and Society. The Institute offers courses ranging from foundation degrees in various specialties in health and social care, to honours degrees, masters and doctoral level study in a number of disciplines.

The department hosts a number GPhC, NMC and HCPC courses to include Non-Medical Prescribing, Occupational therapy, Physiotherapy, Paramedic Science and Social Work. In addition, Masters Courses in Physician Associate, Advanced Clinical Practice, Nutritional therapy and Public Health are part of the growing multi-professional developments within the department.

Staff within the department are extremely well qualified and have a growing research and publication profile and the new appointee would further contribute to these activities.

 1. To undertake Pharmacology and Medicines Management /Optimisation teaching at under-graduate and post-graduate levels across a range of professional programs and to a wide range of students.

 2. To contribute to the assessment process for students including the setting, marking and moderation of student work, individually or collectively as part of a module team in accordance with quality assurance processes (including PSRB standards).

3. To design and develop innovative and engaging learning materials and assessments that inspire students to succeed in their goals.

4. To participate fully in curriculum development, including personal knowledge and expertise in high standards for medicines optimization across all professional programmes.

5. To participate in tripartite arrangements with students and mentors to facilitate effective partnership working and student support.

6. To facilitate effective partnerships with local Trusts and Practice environments.

7. To actively engage in scholarship, research and professional / academic publication in ways that contribute to the University / Institute’s objectives and contribute to ensuring up-to-date, leading edge teaching.

8. To act as a Personal academic tutor.

9. To carry out academic administrative work and participate in relevant committees within the Institute and University.

10. To participate in annual staff development and review processes.

11. To participate fully in the life of the Institute and University, and carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the Head of Institute or her/his nominee.

Essential Criteria

1. Evidence of excellent teaching experience at HE level, including the ability to enthuse, motivate and encourage student learning and intellectual debate, using a variety of methods of learning and teaching, including e-learning.

2. Experience and expertise in Pharmacology and Medicines optimization.

3. Up to date knowledge of non-medical prescribing, including recent initiatives and research.

4. MPharm or Masters degree in a relevant subject area.

5. Up to date knowledge of recent policy, research and transformational health and social care agenda’s that influence the education of students in a multi-professional workforce.

6. Ability to undertake quality research.

7. Evidence of publication and/or scholarly activity consistent with career stage.

8. Ability to communicate confidently and clearly with a wide range of people, both orally and in writing.

9. Effective team-working and inter-personal skills

10. Evidence of on-going CPD.

 Desirable Criteria

1. Specialist knowledge in a broad range of therapeutic topics.

2. PhD or other doctoral qualification.

3 Teaching qualification or HEA membership.*

 *Newly appointed staff who do not already hold HEA professional recognition or a HE teaching qualification, will be required to achieve this within three years of their appointment to the post, either through completion of the PG Cert Learning and Teaching in HE, or for those with significant experience of teaching in HE, via the University’s accredited CPD scheme conferring Fellowship at the appropriate level.
