RSAS Professor of Family Care in Dementia

The Association for Dementia Studies is a highly successful research centre that has a diverse portfolio of research, education and knowledge transfer in person-centred dementia care.

We would like to appoint an additional professor to provide senior academic leadership in the field of Family Care. This post has arisen out of work that the Association of Dementia Studies has undertaken with the RSAS - The Royal Surgical Aid Society. The Association for Dementia Studies and RSAS have worked in partnership since 2012 to develop a service offer to support families caring for a person living with dementia. Both parties have agreed to part fund a professorship to increase research centred on family carers.

The RSAS Professor of Family Care in Dementia would focus wholly on the development of a research and knowledge transfer portfolio around family care and dementia. They would provide a high profile role for the charity as the service develops and augment the senior leadership capacity within the Association for Dementia Studies. This new professorial post would benefit from being part of the multi-professional group of educationalists, researchers and practitioners who are expert in the field of person-centred dementia care and support who make up the body of ADS. It is expected that the post-holder will lead on building evidence-based practical ways of working with people living with dementia and their families that enables them to live well. They will lead research projects, working with other members of the research team, developing relationships and collaborations that enhance the reputation of the University whilst advancing knowledge in the field. 

RSAS is developing new services focussing on the needs of family carers of people living with dementia which will be a high profile National Resource Centre for Carers of People with Dementia (NRCC). The NRCC will provide 3 inter-related services 1) direct services delivery through the Dementia Carers Centre (DCC) 2) a research unit to investigate the experiences, needs and outcomes of dementia carers 3) a policy and influencing unit. 

The RSAS Professor of Family Care in Dementia will be a high calibre academic leader who will work closely with the charity to: 

• help to shape the NRCC as it develops

• lead on the evaluation of the Dementia Carers Centre

• apply for additional research funding utilising the Dementia Carers Centre as a research active centre. 

Being linked to the DCC would enable the post-holder to develop research around the benefits of participating in an intensive course early in the post-diagnostic phase to empower carers to plan ahead; evaluate different models of psycho-social interventions for different groups of carers; to understand the mode of delivery that fits best with the diverse range of people who find themselves in a caring role. 

The successful post holder will be an experienced researcher and bring evidence of research activity and delivery in the field of dementia care and support. They will have a track record in successful grant applications and income generation. The post holder will prepare, review and develop project proposals, working with partners to develop our portfolio of research. They will also promote and disseminate research outputs using a range of media e.g. journals, external reports, refereed conference presentations, etc. 

The post holder will be required to have a proven track record of partnership working with a range of health, social care or housing providers in improving the quality of person centred dementia care practice. 

Selection Process:

Candidates shortlisted for interview will be required to attend a two day selection process as follows: 

Day 1 - Tuesday 10th October 2017:

- delivery of a 15 minute presentation followed by 15 minutes on related questions. This will be immediately followed a broader Q and A session lasting up to a further 15 minutes. 

The title of the presentation is: 

“A 5-year research strategy for making a difference to family care for people affected by dementia in the UK” 

One of the aims of this post is to develop a research strategy with RSAS that underpins the work of the National Resource Centre for Careers of People with Dementia. You are asked in your presentation to provide an overview on how you would go about this, drawing on evidence from international research, practice and UK policy. 

Your audience will be drawn from academic staff, RSAS staff, professionals and people with dementia and family carers. The interview panel will not be present during the presentation but they will receive detailed feedback from the person designated to chair the presentation.

The Association for Dementia Studies

The Association for Dementia Studies was established as a Research Centre at the University of Worcester in 2009 by Professor Dawn Brooker. The research and education portfolio are aligned to the objectives of the first National Dementia Strategy for England and the Prime Minister’s two Challenges on Dementia that were launched in 2012 and 2015, now known as Dementia 2020. 

The Association’s overarching strategic aim is to make a cutting edge contribution to developing evidence-based practical ways of working with people living with dementia, their families, friends and carers that enable them to live well. 

The Association is firmly established as a leading research centre within the University. Through its research, training and knowledge transfer activities the Association has touched the lives of many people. The Association for Dementia Studies is now seen as a “go-to” HEI for advice on dementia care.

Members of the Association for Dementia Studies team are increasingly invited to be part of national and international initiatives on dementia. For example, Professor Dawn Brooker was elected onto the Board of the National Dementia Action Alliance in 2013. She has also been invited to contribute to a high-level DH reference group on domestic dementia policy through to 2020, is part of the G7 Global Action on Dementia and has set up GAP, a global network of influential people engaged in person centred dementia care practice. 

The Association for Dementia Studies has an established and experienced multi-disciplinary team of researchers, educationalists and support personnel who work well together and manage a diverse portfolio of around 30 projects. During this past year 18 staff have been employed directly, alongside five honorary posts and an additional 13 people (the Link Group) whose lives are directly affected by dementia and who work with the Association for Dementia Studies as Experts by Experience. In addition, we have a number of Associate Specialists who provide particular areas of expertise and we also have had a substantial rise in the number of PhD studentships that we are supporting. 

Our work is organised around four overarching clusters of expertise: 

• Home, Communities and Diversity: living well & adjusting post diagnosis
• Skilled Care and Leadership for Complex Care Services
• Person-Centred Environment, Design and Technology
• Creativity, Arts, Nature and Sport.

The recognition of the particular needs of families in relationship to dementia works across all these clusters. TAnDem, the Alzheimer’s Society-funded Doctoral Training Centre that we host in partnership with the Centre for Dementia at the University of Nottingham is a key component of our cluster for Creativity, Arts, Nature and Sport. Similarly, the Enhancing the Healing Environment Programme that was transferred to us from the Kings Fund in 2014 fits well into our cluster on Person-Centred Environment, Design and Technology.

The work of the Association for Dementia Studies spans local, regional, national and international spheres. Having established secure foundations, the Association is now implementing a strategy for becoming a world leader in responding to the challenge of dementia. The priorities for the subsequent 12 months are designed to continue progress along this path. Key to this approach are strong partnerships with health and care providers, commissioners, charities, government departments and other HEIs: 

National Centre for Carers of People with Dementia RSAS Research Unit
The RSAS National Resource Centre for Carers of People with Dementia (NRCC) is the umbrella title for 3 inter-related activities. 

Dementia Carers Centre (DCC) – will be at the heart of the NRCC and will provide direct services to carers of people with dementia. The DCC will be a building-based service, including hotel-style accommodation. Family carers, their friends and persons with dementia will visit the DCC to participate in 2, 3 or 4 day themed events. Themes will include understanding the implications of a new diagnosis, supporting each other as a family unit, planning ahead. At each event participants will benefit from: 

?-Education, training and skills development
?-Social and therapeutic support such as counselling
?-A permanent exhibition and demonstration of aids, adaptations, dementia-friendly design, apps and products that support people with dementia. 

Many of the services available at the DCC will also be available online or using teleconferencing facilities. 

Research Unit (RU) – will focus on the experiences, needs and outcomes of carers of people with dementia. The RU will build evidence on the outcomes of interventions that are intended to support carers. That evidence will be disseminated across all sectors providing support and services to carers of people with dementia. 

Influencing and Campaigns Unit (ICU) – using the findings from our research we aim to influence national and local policy makers, commissioners and providers of services and the general public to promote the human rights, improve quality of life, health and well-being of dementia carers. 

In 2012 RSAS commissioned the Association for Dementia Studies to undertake a literature review on evidence relating to the experience and services available to carers of people with dementia. An update was commissioned and published in 2016. The review showed that much of the research focuses on very specialist services, for example, those provided by clinical psychologists who typically have a leaning toward academic research. There is a paucity of rigorous evidence on the types of services readily available to carers such as carers support provided by third sector organisations.

The scope of enquiry for any RSAS funded research should include carers as a whole and all segments of carers eg attention to gender, age, socio-economic circumstances, ethnicity, geographic location, work and education status. Themes that should be investigated include, but not limited to, the following; 

Experiences:
• The route to becoming a carer and early interventions that can sustain carers’ resilience, health and well-being throughout their caring experience
• Positive - as well as adverse effects - of being a carer
• Experiences of services across all sectors
• Quality of life for carers
• Health and well-being measurements for carers and the impact of (negative and positive) social and environmental factors they experience
• Impact of the policy context on carers of people with dementia eg the relevance and effectiveness of NHS, central and local government policy for carers of people with dementia. 

Needs:
• What do carers need from services and society to support their caring role
• What do carers need from services and society to support their own personal needs
• Support for maintaining resilience through the caring process 

Outcomes:
• Impact of caring on financial circumstances, career opportunities, social networks
• Impact on individual health and well-being
• Research into groups differently impacted by caring eg women of working age, minority communities. 

The outputs from the research should have an impact on how policy is shaped and frontline services delivered. Research therefore should have a service impact evaluation built in to the protocol and a key output from the research should be an accessible guide for non-academics on how the findings from research can be translated into practice. 

Services are only sustainable if they are affordable. Affordability is interpreted in different ways by different individuals and organisations, depending on their financial means. Gold standard services are rarely sustainable, particularly if funded through the public purse or by charitable organisations. RSAS aims for the research undertaken by the NRCC Research Unit to include an assessment of affordability as well as effectiveness and outcomes. 

The Institute of Health and Society 

The Association for Dementia Studies is located within the Institute of Health and Society. This is one of six academic departments at the University of Worcester, based on the St Johns Campus. It has a growing course and research portfolio, and is increasing its student numbers year on year. It works collaboratively with the other departments of the University, in particular with the Institute of Education and the School of Sport and Exercise Science, as well as external partners such as Coventry University, the University of Birmingham and the University of Staffordshire. In addition, the Worcestershire Association of Service Users (WASU) is located on the University Campus and actively contributes to both course development and delivery. There are also strong international links and world-wide opportunities for student and staff exchanges.

Research:

1. To develop and lead networks to foster national collaboration on research into family care and dementia, to be a focus for developing scholarship in this area.

2. To work collaboratively with the Director of the Association for Dementia Studies to develop avenues of research in line with the requirements of RSAS and take the lead on specific programmes of work.

3. To develop a strategy of research activity with RSAS that underpins the work of the National Resource Centre for Carers of People with Dementia (NRCC).

4. To lead on the evaluation of the DCC to assess its impact and to advise on its development.

5. To lead and co-ordinate research activity in family care and dementia within the Association for Dementia Studies.

6. To lead bids for research, consultancy and other additional funds.

7. To produce peer reviewed publications that are internationally excellent or better.

8. To actively engage in the translation of evidence into practice through conferences and workshops aimed at frontline practitioners and families, briefing papers, publications in professional journals (print and online) and direct work with frontline services.

9. To contribute to the enhancement of research quality and thinking in family care and dementia by contributing and participating in national policy and decision making bodies where appropriate.

10. To plan and implement research projects and monitor progress to ensure the achievement of financial and research objectives.

11. To generate significant impact from research.

12. To support the development and implementation of the University’s research strategy alongside that of RSAS.

Learning & Teaching:

1. To supervise students, particularly at Doctoral level, and to mentor colleagues to develop as supervisors.

2. To participate in, and assist other senior colleagues, in the quality enhancement of learning and teaching.

3. To make a significant contribution to the infrastructure of the family and dementia care at national level.
