University Tutor or Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Children's Nursing

This is an exciting opportunity for an exceptional and experienced nurse, with evidence of excellent professional and educational practice to join a team of enthusiastic and committed staff within the Department of Nursing and Midwifery.

In developing our strategy for the launch of the new NMC standards for the future registered nurse and the implementation of the nursing associate role, the department is seeking candidates who uphold the overall mission of the University by providing high quality, accessible learning opportunities, promoting academic enquiry and advancement of knowledge.

The post holder will work closely with practice and university colleagues to develop the discipline of nursing through strong collaborative partnerships and contributing to transformational agendas reflecting the diverse and challenging nature of health and social care. Our desire as an academic community is to develop critical, competent and compassionate practitioners who can make a positive contribution to and impact upon nursing practice.

By providing expert knowledge, the post holder will be expected to teach and lead agreed modules, assess students, supervise undergraduate research studies, and engage in curriculum development.

Staff within the department contribute to the NMC approved degree and it is essential that the appointee is able to adopt a flexible approach to the subjects they teach.

Selection Process:

Short-listed candidates invited to interview will be asked to deliver a fifteen-minute teaching session (followed by 5 minutes of questions) aimed at second year adult nursing students ‘an introduction to evidence-based health care’. The Chair of this panel will feedback to the main interview panel.

Background

The post sits within the Department of Nursing and Midwifery, which is one of three departments within the Institute of Health & Society. The Institute offers courses ranging from foundation degrees in various specialities in health and social care, to honours, masters and doctoral level study in a number of disciplines.

The department has over 700 pre-registration nursing students completing degree programmes. The department has an exceptional national reputation for excellence and the appointee will further develop the quality of our provision through strong collaboration with our practice partners.

The high quality nature of our course provision is confirmed by the Nursing & Midwifery Council having achieved the met standard across all 5 key areas in 2016. Further evidence of our quality provision is evidenced through our student body with graduate employment rates of 100%.

Staff within the department are extremely well qualified and have a growing research and publication profile and the new appointee would further contribute to these activities.

Main duties

Main duties

1. To undertake teaching at under-graduate/post graduate level and to a wide range of students.

2. To contribute to the assessment process for students including the setting, marking and moderation of student work, individually or collectively as part of a module team in accordance with quality assurance procedures.

3. To design and develop innovative and inspiring learning materials and assessments.

4. To participate fully in curriculum development work including planning, development and evaluation of courses.

5. To engage in tripartite arrangements with students and mentors as to facilitate effective partnership working and student support.

6. To act as a Personal Academic Tutor to undergraduate nursing students.

7. To carry out academic administrative work and participate in relevant committees within the Institute and University.

8. To participate in annual staff development and review processes.

9. To actively engage in scholarship, research and professional activity to ensure currency of teaching and professional re-validation.

10. To undertake tutorial responsibilities, including maintaining records, for a group and/or individual students as required in order to support students.

11. To participate fully in the life of the Institute and University, by engaging in representational and ambassadorial activities in support of the Institute’s activities and carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the Head of Institute or her/his nominee.

*Maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the job; participate in appropriate training activities and encourage and support staff in their development and training.

*Take steps to ensure and enhance personal health, safety and well being and that of other staff and students.

Essential Criteria

1. Evidence of teaching students on HE nursing programmes, including the ability to enthuse, motivate and encourage student learning and intellectual debate, using a variety of methods of learning and teaching.

2. Evidence of scholarly activity (research and public output commensurate with career stage) and/ or the ability to utilise outcomes from research, scholarship and continuing educational development to inform practice.

3. Up to date knowledge of pre-registration children’s nursing, including recent policy developments, research and current issues in child health and social care.

4. Master’s Degree in a relevant subject (or currently studying).

5. Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to communicate confidently and clearly with a range of people including students, tutors, managers, representatives of external organisations and the public, both orally and in writing.

6. Effective team-working and inter-personal skills.

7. Evidence of on-going continuous professional development.

8. NMC registration as an children’s nurse.

Desirable Criteria

1. PhD /other doctoral qualification or working towards.

2. Experience of curriculum development.

3. Relevant teaching qualification or HEA fellowship.*

*Newly appointed staff who do not already hold HEA professional recognition or a HE teaching qualification, will be required to achieve this within three years of their appointment to the post, either through completion of the PG Cert Learning and Teaching in HE, or for those with significant experience of teaching in HE, via the University’s accredited CPD scheme conferring Fellowship at the appropriate level.
